Racing is not nearly as big as it was years ago. The Triple Crown races are the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes, and The Belmont Stakes. The Derby is run on the first Saturday in May, followed by the Preakness two weeks later.Thenthe grueling Belmont Stakes in three weeks later. Only eleven horses in history have ever won the coveted Triple Crown, the last one being Affirmed in 1978. Severl have won two legs but came up short in one, usually the Belmont which is a distance of a mile and a half. Wagering is still done on the races and off shore betting is very popular. Horses that run in these races do not come cheap. Thoroughbreds can sell in the thousands of dollars, and some in the millions. Still, there is no guarantee that the horse you buy will be a winner. There is a horse named, “The Green Monkey” that sold for $16,000,000. He was a total flop, and is now standing stud duty for a measly $5000. Yet others such as AP Indy, and Kingmambo that stand stud for $300,000. It is not a sport for poor people, however there are races that run horses for a much lower price, and for much lower purse money.
Casino’s have been a large part of the decline in the interest of horse racing as many people are interested in only the betting aspect and how much they can win. Others like myself, have the interest of the horse in mind. My uncle was a trainer in Md. and I have been involved with this sport my entire life. I am fortunate to know some people in this sport, and they are very nice people. Hope this helps you.

Horse racing is called “the king of sports” and most owners of horses at major racetracks obviously are affluent and have to be to be able to afford the fees: trainers, feed, vet bills, blacksmith, etc.
However, people who work with horses come from all backgrounds in life: rich, poor, male, female, black, white, etc etc. Many do it because they love horses and naturally are attracted to working with them and just love being around them.
It’s very dicey from a business perspective. A person can lose alot of money owning and/or betting horses likewise, a person can make a substantial sum owning the right horse, cashing the right big ticket or ultimately owning a horse that becomes a champion then retires to stallion or broodmare.

i think you mean racing is the sport of kings, racing used to be a wealthy person thing, but now you can claim a horse for $1500; triple crown racing is so big because it is the big three races, it is hard enough to have a horse that is good enough to win one, much less to win all three of the great races, racing is not nearly as big as it used to be, more people should get out to the tracks and give racing a chance; i know people are put off because they believe it is mean to race the horses, mean to hit them, but there are many laws in the racing industries that ensure the fair treatment of the horses
